OSHA Issues Warnings to Store Owners urging them To Stay Prepared for Black Friday

OSHA has sent a letter to all the major retailers of the city of Phoenix urging them to take all the necessary precautions on Black Friday. It has also suggested that all stores have police officers to manage large crowds. As per the federal agency, a plan should be created in such a way that it gives a specific location to every employee. Joel Kinjerski of Phoenix says, “It's just chaos”. “You walk in and it's like a cattle stampede. Everyone everywhere is just grabbing stuff, there's fights, it gets ugly”, he adds. Black Friday officially kick starts the holiday season the day after Thanksgiving every year. Stores give heavy discounts on every sale, typically drawing in hordes of customers. Chase Eggert of Scottsdale says, “People do die because of Black Friday, why put yourself in that position”. OSHA cites company after workers’ fall on stadium roof

A subcontractor is facing the axe after workers felt from the roof of the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium. The accident resulted in injuring two workers seriously. OSHA has cited Birdair, Inc., of Amherst, NY, for the accident where two workers slide 260 ft down the domed roof side. According to OSHA, the workers were not wearing the required safety fall protection equipment and not trained for hazards related with falls. OSHA has the penalties for about $45,000, which one is for willful violation where employees were not wearing the required fall protection equipment and one for serious workers for employees not trained in hazards associated with falls. The company has said that they will contest the citations. The safety of the workers lies at the hand of the employers. It is the responsible of the employers to provide OSHA safety training programs to ensure the safety of the workers. The OSHA training courses are available both online and on-site for the worker’s training.

OSHA has Listed Work-sites with Highest Injuries and Illnesses

Based on the most recent survey, Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA has released a listing of 15,000 work-sites that have the highest numbers of illnesses and injuries in the nation for their industries. OSHA has stated that they have sent a letter to the work-sites along with the copies of their illness and injury data as well as the list of the most frequently cited OSHA standards in their specific industry. The Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, Dr. David Michaels has announced in March 9, 2010 that, “Receipt of this letter means that workers in that particular establishment are being injured at a higher rate than in most other businesses of its kind in the country.” According to him the employers whose companies have high injury and illness rates need to take instant steps to protect their employees. OSHA cites Peekskill, New York, contractor for full hazard at Peekskill Middle School Construction Site

Tarrytown, NY. - Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Kane Contracting Inc. for allegedly violating safety standards during the renovation work at Peekskill Middle School that is located at 212 Ringold St. The contractor is charged of $42,000 in penalties and inspection opened June 29 in response to the complaint. During inspection OSHA found that the workers were exposed to falls up to 18 feet at the time of using scaffold for the installation of sheetrock on the ceiling of the auditorium. The scaffold had no guardrails, and fall protection equipment was neither used nor supplied. According to OSHA’s requirement, an effective form of fall protection should be in place and should be used whenever employees are working on scaffolds 10 feet higher above the next level.
