OSHA has Listed Work-sites with Highest Injuries and Illnesses

OSHA has Listed Work-sites with Highest Injuries and Illnesses
Based on the most recent survey, Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA has released a listing of 15,000 work-sites that have the highest numbers of illnesses and injuries in the nation for their industries. OSHA has stated that they have sent a letter to the work-sites along with the copies of their illness and injury data as well as the list of the most frequently cited OSHA standards in their specific industry.

The Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, Dr. David Michaels has announced in March 9, 2010 that, “Receipt of this letter means that workers in that particular establishment are being injured at a higher rate than in most other businesses of its kind in the country.” According to him the employers whose companies have high injury and illness rates need to take instant steps to protect their employees.

The fact is that being under the OSHA scanner is not a good thing for a company let alone being cited. Many companies have been cited by OSHA in the past and the fine that they have to pay is immensely huge. If you don’t want your company to come under OSHA scanner then, as an employer it is your duty to provide safe and healthy environment to your employees. OSHA do make surprise inspection from time to time and you should always be prepared for that. You must comply with their rules and regulations.

OSHA compliance training programs must be provided to the employees as a step to comply with OSHA standards. There are many OSHA training courses available online as well as on-site. OSHA training certification is necessary to stay current, understand OSHA as well as to comply with their rules and regulations.

OSHA has many times tried to develop the standards that need changes for the betterment of the workers, employees and for the industry itself. If OSHA determines to have a new and specific standard, then the advisory committees may be called upon to go the matter farther. OSHA possesses two standing committees and an ad hoc committee can be appointed to scrutinize the most important areas that are concern to OSHA.The standing advisory committees of OSHA are:

    1. National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH). This committee advises, consults with and makes recommendations to the secretary of HHS and also to the Labor on matters regarding administration of the Act.

    2. Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health, which advises the Secretary of Labor on formulation of construction safety and health standards and other regulations.

The first one that is NACOSH is concern with the workers safety and health problems. Technical assistance to OSHA is provided by them and they recommend standard for OSHA’s adoption. When necessary, this committee can make workplace investigations, gather testimony from employers and employees and require that employers’ measure and report employee exposure to potentially hazardous materials.
